I picked up photography as well as really dove in on how I could make myself healthier.
A little background. I have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). For those who do not know what that is, it is a hormonal disorder common in women. Symptoms include irregular periods, acne, depression, higher levels of androgens which is a male hormone - this results in more hair growth in places women don't typically want it. A large symptom is Insulin Resistance. This means that the insulin that your body is producing isn't doing its job. This results in weight gain.
I learned I had PCOS when I was 14. Unfortunately, most doctors don't typically understand it all that well and will just try and prescribe Metformin and say diet and exercise. What's incredibly frustrating is the Metformin only treats the symptoms and doesn't actually treat the problem and they don't give you direction on how to eat better and how to work out.
What I have learned doing my own research and seeing a Nutritionist for a short time is Diet and Exercise are everything. I don't mean a diet that you temporarily do and then stop once you've grown tired of it or reached your weight goal. I mean a complete lifestyle change. When I wasn't eating any processed food and food low in sugar and refined carbs (carbs that have been processed and the natural fibers stripped out), I had more energy, had less PCOS symptoms, felt less bloated, my skin looked amazing, and I lost an incredible amount of weight. I felt mentally and physically better.
Now, I fell off the wagon and started eating simple carbs and things loaded with sugar again and guess what happened, I gained weight, lost my energy, and feel terrible. I don't want to give up though! I am getting back on that wagon.
Now, I'm still struggling on making eating better a habit but that's the point of this blog! I hope to motivate myself while also motivating others who stumble upon this. I hope to help those who are looking to change their life. Be it because they want to just better themselves or they have some kind of disorder where diet and exercise helps!
The recipes on here will mainly be low carb since the best way to combat PCOS is to lower the amount of sugar and processed carbs out of your diet. So if you are doing Keto and you find that it works for you in the long run good for you! I myself feel like Keto is bit too extreme for me to continue the rest of my life but I do want to follow it for the first couple months and then slowly add certain foods back in. It will help me find out how my body reacts to those foods and if my body likes a higher amount of carbs or not. Everyone is different! Best way to find out what your body likes is to try different things!
I can't wait to get further into this journey and share what I make, learn, and feel!
